Travel Sickness

By Kelan Grady at 2010-08-12 04:28:29
Like humans, travel sickness in dogs is caused by the brain receiving excess signals from the body's balance system. Obviously, the lack of balance can cause the dog to feel anxious and nauseas and may ultimately cause the dog to vomit. Naturally, this is very distressing for both dog and owner. Therefore, it is important to address these signs as soon as possible.

Travel sickness and in particular car sickness is often thought to affect mostly children, however medical opinion estimates that 80% of the population suffer from motion sickness at some point in their lives. My daughter was fine until the age of 6, when we discovered that the delay between announcing feeling sick and actually vomiting is so small as to be insignificant. Now 10, she only reads on a motorway or dual carriageway.

Believe it or not, travel sickness actually happens to between 60% and 80% of the world's population at one time or another. Fortunately for those individuals that fly, it happens to most people while travelling in a car, but that is not to say that travel sickness does not apply on a plane! It does. If you start to feel dizzy or sick whilst flying then you are almost certainly experiencing travel sickness.

Try to avoid them where possible. Not only can they dehydrate the body, they can also cause bloating which doesn't help. Being in the air can have the same effect as tripling the amount of alcohol you've consumed.Try not to have an empty stomach when you get on the plane. At the same time, try not eat too heavy a meal. Dairy products, or meals with high calories, salt or protein content are not advisable.

If you are one of those people that dread travelling any long distances for fear of travel sickness. If you've ever kicked off your holiday being copiously sick into a carrier bag, then you are well aware of the miseries of travel sickness. Well, fear not, here are some very useful tips to help keep it at bay.

Your brain spends much of its time processing information concerning position and movement from different parts of your body. The system works well - so long as the various sources of information agree with each other. But when your eyes tell you one thing, the vestibular system in your inner ear (which monitors balance) tells you something different and the receptors in your skin, muscles, joints and spine disagree with both of them - things are liable to go a little haywire and you won't be feeling your best.

Ensure your kids can see out the window, so if they are a bit little to see out they may need a booster chair of some sort. Plus if you have sunshades on your window you may decide to remove them also. Obviously this will depend on the time of the year and what impact this will have on the kids. They may be more likely to get upset from sun in their eyes. Therefore it is completely up to the individual to weigh up the pros and cons of each choice.
